Nlite 130MB ISO, 400MB Installed

Updated December 17th, 2008

This is not an image of Windows XP, this is an Nlite configuration file. Visit the Nlite Website or the Nlite Forum for Nlite support. This includes the settings file and a sample user file without the product key. It is ready to go as is, just open Nlite and point it to your XP Setup source, then import this session file.

This is suggested for intermediate and advanced users only. It is also suggested that one tests the ISO within a Virtual PC prior to the physical install. This was originally created for and tested on the Asus Eee PC 701 4G.

Notes & Tips

•  Quite a few tweaks were added using the Nlite tweaks section.
•  Folders safe to delete from i386: COMPDATA, DRW, LANG (unless using languages), WINNTUPG, WIN9XUPG, WIN9XMIG
•  The above folders do not  effect a Winnt.exe New Installation, however it is up to you whether you need any of them.
•  Remove Manual Install or Upgrade if making an ISO for a CD/DVD only.
•  Printer Support is removed in this Setup - add it back in with the Compatibility section of Nlite - will grow approx 5MB.
•  Disabling Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service will cause errors/messages in the Event Log - leave as manual.
•  8 visible Services are set to Automatic, 3 are set to defaults, rest are manual.
•  Regardless of removing ActiveX Streaming Video support, my own Remote Video app still works and is based on ActiveX.
•  Webcam on the 4G works fine. I use Media Player 6.4 to play music from the SD Card.
•  Uninstall QOS and File Sharing from TCP/IP properties post install to get rid of Server and Perf event log errors.
•  Post Install I also disable Shell Hardware Detection and Windows Firewall (sometimes).
•  Leave Windows Firewall for extra security and Disable Themes for faster response, eg. on the 2G/Slow SSDs.
•  Many others I have seen on the web remove important XP related components/services, I've left some in.
•  Some normal things will always show up in the event log, eg. USB Disk or USB CD/DVD related (ftdisk, CDROM), etc.
•  There is still alot I do post install for tweaks and cleanup, manually or using a registry file.
•  Installed and tested many times within Virtual Box before finding a nice relatively small error free install.
•  Some apps may still not install or work properly, I have not tested everything.
•  I Disable the Page file and Recycle Bin also (Hibernation and System Restore are already disabled).
•  You can use Disk Compression to shrink the install. (eg. 400mb shrinks to 300mb).

Font Sizes

Removing Color Schemes also removes the font sizes (Large, Extra Large) in the Appearance section of Display Properties for the installed Classic and Standard Schemes in this Nlite setup. If you want that feature then you either need to uncheck COLOR SCHEMES or do the following:

Nlite claims you save 160K, the Registry file below is 400k, and that includes some registry values that stay there anyway. (reg files also include additional bytes though).

Registry File 1:
This will put back ALL the color schemes and also the font sizes.
Download (252 downloads)

Registry File 2:
This next one will just fix the classic and standard schemes so it is lighter (66kb) ... this will work as long as the only Schemes installed are the Classic and Standard (check the drop down list first, Schemes NOT Styles) which would be how it is post install of this Nlite setup. It assigns the sizes to 0 = Classic and 1 = Standard, whereas on a full color scheme install those keys would be 20 and 21 (see above reg file for example). Download (179 downloads)

 "EnablePrefetcher"=dword:00000000

•  Change your locales and unattended settings from within Nlite if needed.
•  Enter your own product key and users from within Nlite, sample file provided.
•  If you want to show the OOBE at the final stage of setup (allows creating new users, activation, etc), uncheck OOBE for removal and use HIDE PAGES and uncheck Hide OOBE.

Eee PC Hardware Drivers

I suggest adding in the drivers from the thread on the EeeUser forum. These add an additional 20mb installed. Post Install, you can safely delete the drivers NLDRV folder in the Windows folder. If you must have the FN keys for the audio and Wifi functions, then you need to manually install the Asus ACPI software post install.

The integrated drivers linked in that thread above are primarily for the original 701 4G models.
From recent installation on a new 701SD (with a slower 8GB SSD) all drivers worked except the
network drivers had to be updated to new ones from the Asus DVD/Website. The same goes for
an installation on a new 900A, however that had to go back to Linux as it was just way to slow
in XP and hung for long periods of time (bad SSD or slow 4GB SSD PCIe Card?).
